The Secret Soul Society – Keep On Trying EP (Hell Yeah Recordings)

The Secret Soul Society, the project of South Wales’ Cal Gibson, returns with the “Keep On Trying” EP, on Hell Yeah Recordings. This four-track offering continues Gibson’s impressive run, blending rich influences that range from Balearic daydreams to intimate after-hours soul burners.

Gibson, known for his role in Nottingham’s Neon Heights during the 2000s, a deep house and downtempo collective admired by label owner Marco, first made his mark on Hell Yeah with the acclaimed “Keep The Mystique” in 2023. That 15-track collection showcased his talent for crafting unique soundscapes through carefully chosen samples. Since then, he has evolved his sound further on releases like “Paper Wave” and “Magic Wand,” fusing jazz, funk, Afro, beats, dub, soul, and reggae elements into distinctive grooves.

The EP opens with “Happy To Be,” featuring gentle, sun-soaked grooves, swirling keys, and dreamy pads that conjure the feel of a hazy Mediterranean sunset. Nostalgic soul samples envelop the track, creating a laid-back vibe ideal for golden-hour listening. Next, “Orange Surprise” offers a slice of magical downtempo bliss, with soft broken rhythms and romantic vocal hints, drifting smoothly between ambient soul and chilled electronica—perfect for quiet introspection or late-night relaxation.

The title track “Keep On Trying” shifts gears with crystalline synths and sugary pads paired with a meandering, wonky bassline. Soft male vocals add a steamy edge, enriching the textured soundscape. Closing the EP, “What You Do To Me” brings a slow-motion disco feel infused with 80s-style synths and lush reverb, wrapping the listener in warm, funky vibes.

The “Keep On Trying” EP showcases The Secret Soul Society at his most heartfelt and dynamic, blending a rich tapestry of sounds that will resonate with fans of deep, soulful, and genre-defying electronic music.
