Soul Clap – EFUNK01 (House Of EFUNK)

Soul Clap is kicking off their new club music-focused label, House of EFUNK, with their first EP of 2019: the party-tested “Jupiter Crush.” This two-track instrumental release is packed with that signature electronic funk the duo is known for, ready to get any dancefloor moving. With two distinct moods, these tracks pull from a range of influences to deliver a cosmic and soulful experience.

The EP’s A-side, “Jupiter Crush,” is an intergalactic trip that begins in Detroit before blasting into our solar system. Built around a broken-beat house groove, the track is a cosmic ride through the moons of Jupiter, with its soundscape created using Roland’s iconic Jupiter 8 synthesizer.

On the flip side, “Natural Bliss” brings things back down to earth. Inspired by the deep house sounds of New York and New Jersey—and legendary acts like Masters At Work—this track starts with warm percussion and an easy mood before evolving into a feel-good house anthem. A big shout-out goes to Lee Curtiss, who mixed down both tracks, ensuring they hit with maximum impact.

In the words of Soul Clap’s Lonely C, the EP’s name comes directly from the Roland Jupiter 8 synthesizer that was used to produce most of the sounds on the title track. He explains that “Jupiter Crush” started as an experiment to create a MIDI loop he could listen to on repeat. “Once I got the melody and rhythm I wanted,” he says, “I recorded about five different patches playing the same thing but with the parameters moving all over the place and panned differently to get this wide and saturated sound!”

As for the B-side, “making Natural Bliss was just pure fun,” Lonely C notes. “This was all about getting those drums dirty as can be by running them thru a cheap tube amp to get that grit.”

This EP is a declaration of the House of EFUNK motto: Everybody’s Freaky Under Nature’s Kingdom! It’s a powerful launch for a label that promises to keep the party weird and the grooves deep.
