Oliver Nickels – Giant Carnivorous Amoebas EP (Rhombus)

Oliver Nickels’ latest effort out of Rhombus HQ branches out from House and Techno with a collection of bubbling analog basslines, 1980’s futurism, and a classy bootleg of Feist’s ‘One Evening’. The E.P.  pays homage to a few of Oliver’s influences.

On ‘Crockett’s JX3P’, the classic 1983 Roland synthesizer meets Jan Hammer’s masterful ‘Crockett’s Theme’.  He slows the groove down and washes the Miami beach in warm, shimmering synth chords and fuzzy leads, held together by a magnetically crisp bass sequence and hypnotic breakbeat.

Giant Carnivorous Amoebas is just that.  An unstoppable lurching force, swallowing everything in its path. Bubbling analog synths spill out of test tubes as a 1950’s laboratory is launched into space, riding on twisting heavy bassline, gliding chords, and a tough B-boy breakbeat.

‘Friends for One Evening (Feisty Reboot)’ takes us back into House territory, with a laid back and spacious re-imagining of one of Feist’s most brilliant songs.  Swirling synths and fluttering percussion, along with Feist’s chopped and flipped vocals, echo over deep dubby bass.
