Microlot continues his impressive run of form with a new release on the venerable Seven Villas imprint, titled Cobalt. This four-track excursion into the deeper realms of electronic music showcases the artist’s ability to blend organic atmospheres with a precise, club-focused rhythmic foundation. Seven Villas, founded in 2014 by Pablo Bolivar, has long been a bastion for what Bolivar calls musica para estar, or music for being. Based in the scenic Cantabria region of Spain, the label draws inspiration from the local landscape, translating the essence of nature into a sophisticated palette of soft, deep, and dark textures.
The title track Cobalt is a masterclass in tension and release. It features a pulsating bassline that anchors a set of shimmering, crystalline synth patterns, evoking the cold yet vibrant hue of its namesake. Unlike some of his previous, more minimal-leaning works, Microlot embraces a richer harmonic structure here, creating a sense of forward momentum that keeps the listener engaged throughout. The track Contemplation follows a similar path but leans more heavily into the ambient-influenced side of the Seven Villas aesthetic, with spacious reverb tails and subtle field recordings that create a sense of vastness.
Adding a different dimension to the release is the inclusion of a remix from D. Diggler. His dub interpretation of Contemplation strips the original back to its essential components, emphasizing the low-end weight while introducing a series of echoed stabs and rhythmic shifts that are tailor-made for the dancefloor. D. Diggler’s presence on the release provides a historical bridge to the golden era of German minimal techno, while Microlot’s contemporary production techniques ensure the EP feels entirely current.
Cobalt is a release that finds its natural home in the transition periods of a night.
