Pawas – Limited Volume 2 (Black Key Records)

The Black Key Records team return with the second in their limited, vinyl-only series, with Cologne based producer, Pawas, delivering a truly excellent and diverse 4 track EP of top-drawer house music, which oozes quality from start to finish.  Queue the simply titled “Limited Volume 2”.

Brighton based Black Key Records has been building a enviable reputation since it first came onto the scene, late 2011.  Since then we’ve seen top quality releases from artists at the top of their game, including BLM, Ethyl & Flori, Milton Jackson and James Johnston, plus the first limited release from rising star, Ugly Drums.

First up we have “Dubba’, an understated but crisp opener which uses delayed rim shots, subtle synth stabs and perfectly executed sub bass to build a flittering, shuffling groove, which has unmistakable dance floor appeal.

Next comes the simply named “DA”, which builds from nothing into a pulsating and hypnotic houser, moulding loose hi hats, layered claps and an acid-infused bass line to supreme effect.  Add in expertly-placed rising synths, plus a haunting vocal sample, subtly used, and you have a serious track on your hands.  Marvellous.

On the flip we move into completely different territory with “2047” – such a contrast from the opening 2 tracks, but delightfully so. This is guaranteed to make heads nod and feet tap, mixing together jazzy keys, fluid tom rolls and perfectly panned percussion.  Then the vocal drops.  An outstanding piece of music.

Last, but certainly not least, we have “Mello” which sees Pawas partner with Matthias Keul to great effect.  A more down-tempo and musical affair, rounding off the EP is true style

This EP is a real statement from the Black Key camp, once again proving that they are committed to releasing nothing but top drawer material from an array of superb artists, of which Pawas is unquestionably one.
